Sustainable Works

On this night, a substantial portion of the proceeds from all No Es Basura sales will benefit Sustainable Works.

The exhibit.

For ninety days in 2012, environmentalist and educator Peter Gwillim Kreitler walked the same one quarter mile stretch of Santa Monica Beach collecting flotsam and debris that floated in from the ocean or was left on the beach. Pieces of this collected trash were taken to his home where all was sorted, a portion discarded, much recycled and the rest saved, meticulously cleaned and catalogued.

A year and a half later the selected items were photographed by fine arts photographer John Reiff Williams.

The body of work is entitled No Es Basura - This is Not Trash.

The Sustainable Works mission:

"We cannot wait for others to solve our environmental problems. Through education, we activate sustainable practices and behaviors to foster a safe, healthy and equitable world. The future of our planet lies with us."

Sustainable Works is an environmental education organization and is currently a project of Community Partners. Our work is made possible by the City of Santa Monica's Sustainable City Plan, our program participants, grants, individual donors, and in-kind service donations from Santa Monica College. Although our programs are designed for Santa Monica residents and businesses, our participants come from all across the greater Los Angeles Area. Sustainable Works is interested in expanding its programs into other cities with a focus on sustainability, resource efficiency or community development.

We exist to ensure that the concepts of sustainability and the actions associated with living a sustainable lifestyle are integrated into the daily activities of individuals, institutions and businesses. We do this by providing hands-on, interactive, educational experiences, serving as a liaison between governments, institutions, businesses and individuals and fostering community development. We turn knowledge into tangible actions that improve our quality of life by promoting sustainable practices in our urban environment. Our goal is to ensure a just society, a clean and healthy environment and a vibrant economy for present and future generations.
